Sugar Mountain is located in Banner Elk, NC.
The base elevation of Sugar Mountain is the
largest North Carolina ski area with over 115
acres of skiing terrain. The summit elevation is
5,300 feet with a 1,200 foot vertical drop. The
longest run is about 1 ½ miles downhill. In
addition to offering downhill skiing and
snowboarding, Sugar also offers much more. If
you are a more experienced skier or boarder you

If you are not a skiing or boarding enthusiast
there are even more ways to enjoy Sugar. Ice
skating is an addition to Sugar Mountain in the
winter of 2007 and 2008. Including stores, the
lodge, and the grill, Sugar has something for
everyone. Snow tubing is also available with
several lanes and each session lasts for 1 ½
hours. Sugar also offers group and individual
lessons and ski schools are available for the
kids as well. |
| Beech Mountain, just minutes away from Sugar
Mountain, is another local ski mountain with
many features and activities for everyone. Ski
Beech is the highest ski area in the eastern
part of North America with its summit at 5,506
feet above sea level. The vertical drop is 830
feet long and offers easy to difficult terrain. |

There is a terrain park for the more daring
skiers and boarders. Be sure to check out the
updated terrain park opening in the 2007/2008
winter that will offer more jumps and features
than ever before. Ski Beech is the perfect place
for your North Carolina ski vacation no matter
how large your group may be. Ski Beech is very
accommodating to all groups no matter the size.
They offer discounted rentals, lessons, and even
provide a meal for your group. The Village at
Beech Mountain provides restaurants and stores
for those who wish to stay off the slopes. There
is also an ice skating rink in the Village for
the kids and the kids at heart. |
| Hawksnest is one of the locals’ favorite places
to ski and snowboard due to the less crowded
lift lines. They are the only mountain in the
area that offers night skiing on Friday and
Saturday nights until midnight. The entire
mountain has lights for night skiing. The
elevation at the top of Hawksnest is 4,819 feet
above sea level and they have a vertical drop of
619 feet. At Hawksnest they have 20 acres of
skiing terrain and 100% snowmaking capabilities. |

For
the 2007/2008 season Hawksnest is expanding
their beginners’ area, possibly making it the
best place to learn to ski and snowboard for
your North Carolina ski vacation.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is another ski area
located near Boone, NC. This mountain is widely
known for their terrain park which is sponsored
and built by Board Paradise. Board Paradise is a
local board shop that puts the best boards under
the feet of their customers all over the
Southeast. Appalachian Ski Mountain’s terrain
park features every type of rail slide, box, and
jumps to be desired by the experienced and
inexperienced boarders/skiers. Many consider
Appalachian to have he best terrain park in the
Southeast. This North Carolina ski vacation
destination is in the process of installing all
new snow making equipment, pumping out over 1
million pounds of snow per hour allowing them to
have mid season conditions in the early and late
parts of the season.
