The North
Carolina Mountains around the High Country are
one of the top destinations for fly fishing in
the south. Fly fishing enthusiasts come from all
around to enjoy the Watauga River, the New River
and all the many streams and brooks in between.
There are several “hot spots” around this area,
and we have provided some information on local
areas to fish and local guide shops that will
actually take you and your loved ones out for a
fishing excursion, some of which are overnight
trips complete with a camping experience near
the river. Our gorgeous
Blue Ridge Cabin Rentals are located from
many great fly fishing spots and guide services;
when you stay with us you can enjoy many
vacation activities you love.
Boone’s Fork Creek, which spans from the
Price Lake area all the way to Foscoe NC, is a
great catch and release location to fish for
trout. Dutch Creek just near Hwy
194 in Valle Crucis also provides an excellent
location and is well stocked with both wild and
hatchery bred fish in this area. To catch
monster trout, visitors should definitely try
fly fishing along the Watauga River. Originating
at the foot of Grandfather Mountain, this river
is full of trout and other varieties and has
many a spot you can pull over and park,
just a short walk down a steep hill to the
river.
Stop by many of the local fishing guide shops
in town and they’ll give you a few pointers, or
reserve a special spot for your group on one of
their excursions. Fishing guides take guests to their preferred spots and
provide all the necessary equipment and details.
Guides like Appalachian Angler and Foscoe
Fishing Company are right on the river and their
shops are close to excellent fishing spots.
For those that would rather just try their
hand at fishing in a well-stocked pond, spend
the day enjoying Grandfather Trout Farm in
Banner Elk, just near the entrance to Seven
Devils. This trout farm has many ponds and even
stocks rainbow trout. You pay for only what you
catch, and we’re sure you’ll come home with
plenty of tasty trout.
Whether you spend the day on the river,
enjoying the sights and sounds of the Blue
Ridge, or take a group trip to a local spot with
a guide, you’ll enjoy spending the day fly
fishing. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the
mountains, get some peace and quiet and truly
take advantage of all that nature gives us. Here
are a few local shops and spots.
