The High
Country is home to some of the best and most
loved attractions in the South. Places like
Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, the
Blowing Rock, and Linville Caverns are always

Grandfather Mountain has been entertaining
groups for decades, is the highest peak in the
Blue Ridge range, and is a renowned nature
preserve. Visitors from all around enjoy walking
across the mile high swinging bridge and
browsing the many animal habitats and museum
exhibits. Also, there are nature trails in the
park, and a plethora of hiking trails once you
enter the Grandfather Mountain
Backcountry.
Tweetsie Railroad, located in Blowing Rock,
has been another family favorite located in the
High Country for decades.
Take a three mile ride through the scenic
mountains aboard the #12, the last surviving
steam locomotive from the East Tennessee and
Western North Carolina Railroad. This family
favorite attraction has kid and adult friendly
rides, a gem mine, chair lift, and several
family shows that everyone enjoys. Each year the
park also features a special 4th of July
celebration complete with fireworks after dark,
and during the October Halloween season, the
park features Ghost Train at night which is
always a treat.
Continue down the road into the town of
Blowing Rock, and visit the Blowing Rock, North
Carolina’s oldest travel attraction. Visitors to
the region began coming to visit the rock that
juts out over the Johns River gorge in 1933 and
haven’t stopped since. Visitors get to hear the
legend of the Blowing Rock and see miles of
incredible views from this amazing cliff.
Linville Caverns is located in the Linville
Valley and is a privately owned cave that
provides tours and educational exhibits to
visitors. View the stalactites and the
stalagmites and learn about how the mountains of
the Blue Ridge were formed millions of years
ago. A special part of the cave tour takes you
through the cave and over a bridge that is built
over a bottomless pool of water. Experts and
dive teams have tried to find a bottom to the
pool in the cave and have yet to locate the
actual bottom.
The ski resorts in the area draw many
visitors to the High Country each winter season
and each time it snows. Resorts like Sugar
Mountain, Beech Mountain, and Hawksnest are just
a short drive away from Valle Crucis and Blowing
Rock, and Appalachian Ski Mountain is a popular spot
where many people learn to snow ski. Each ski
