Many
vacationers come to the area in search of North
Carolina waterfalls, and we have plenty of them
within driving distance of our Blue Ridge
Vacation Cabins. Some local favorites are Connestee and Rainbow Falls in Brevard NC,
Horsepasture, Toxaway, and Whitewater Falls in
Cashiers NC, Linville Falls, and Looking Glass
and Sliding Rock Falls in the Pisgah National
Forest. Most of these North Carolina waterfalls
have a short hike in to see the picturesque
falls, and many visitors bring picnic lunches to
enjoy hiking and sightseeing for the day – just
be sure to bring a bag for your trash so these waterfalls stay pristine and open to the
public.
Brevard has some great North Carolina
waterfalls
like the Connestee Falls. Located on US 276, the
Connestee Falls are actually part of privately
owned land, but the public is allowed access. A
staired walkway, as well as a bricked walkway,
are
well maintained and even handicap accessible to
see the beautiful 110 foot falls. Also in Brevard
NC is Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Falls is
located on NC 281, and while it is also on
privately owned land, this land is more
difficult to access and navigate. The Rainbow
Falls are around 200 feet high and are named after
the permanent rainbow created by mist at the
bottom of the falls.
Also boasting awe-inspiring North Carolina
waterfalls is Cashiers NC. Three of the more
famous falls in this area are Horsepasture,
Toxaway, and Whitewater Falls. Horsepasture
Falls are located on US 64 on the Horsepasture
River. The Toxaway Falls are located on the
Toxaway River and cascade along almost 250 feet
of sliding rocks and drops. The Toxaway Falls
are visible from Highway 64, but there is no
hiking trail leading to the falls, so a view
from the road is best. The most famous of the
Cashiers waterfalls is the Whitewater Falls.
Whitewater Falls are not only the tallest North
Carolina waterfalls, but they are some of the
highest in the Southeast, reaching over 400 feet
in height. The Whitewater Falls are accessible
by driving, and there is parking located on
Highway 281 for a fee of $2.00 per vehicle. The
parking area offers a beautiful view, is
wheelchair accessible, and has bathrooms open to
the public. If you wish to view the falls from
the top, the hike is not too difficult and is
on a paved path.
Some of the most famous North Carolina
waterfalls are the Linville Falls. Located
directly off the Blue Ridge Parkway, visitors
going to see the falls have a beautiful,
meandering drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway
with Linville Falls located near mile marker
316. The parking area is complete with a
visitor’s center which houses bathrooms and is
open during the summer months. There are 2
hiking trails available to see the falls. The
more popular Erwin’s View Trail is 1.6 miles in
length and of moderate difficulty. This trail
provides lovely views of the main falls. The
other, more difficult trail leads closer to the
bottom of the falls and is more for the avid
hiker. Linville Falls, being some of the more
famous North Carolina waterfalls, are more
heavily visited by tourists but are definitely
worth the hike.
The Pisgah National Forest is home to two famous
North Carolina Waterfalls, and is a great place
to visit while on your Blue Ridge Vacation.
Looking Glass Falls is located on US 276 and
about 5 miles from the Pisgah National Forest
entrance. The 60-foot falls are named after the
rock, Looking Glass Rock, from which they fall.
Looking Glass Falls has the added benefit of
allowing swimming at the base of the falls for
those who are adventurous, but swimming is at
your own risk, and there is no lifeguard on
duty. After swimming in the falls, take the
trail down to the famous Sliding Rock Falls for
some more family fun. Sliding Rock Falls are
open to the public with a ranger on duty during
the summer months. Sliding Rock Falls is a
naturally created sloping waterfall that is a
great family afternoon activity. Be sure to take
advantage of this natural attraction in the
summertime, because even in July and August the
water temperature is quite chilly! The price to
enter the Sliding Rock Recreational Area is
$1.00.
